Founder story

from movement
towards softness

My name is Max Cookward. I’m a filmmaker, dancer, choreographer and movement meditation facilitator.

For the last several years, I’ve lived in constant movement — touring, performing, filming and travelling between cities, retreat centres and creative communities.

Alongside my work as an artist, I’ve spent many years leading movement meditation workshops internationally, facilitating soft gatherings, cacao ceremonies and creative residencies. Across these spaces, I’ve worked with different communities to find softness through the body and return to a deeper sense of self.

Through this life, I’ve experienced extraordinary beauty, intimacy and connection. I’ve also witnessed how exhausted so many creative people have become.

Artists, freelancers, queer people and marginalised creatives are often asked to keep adapting, producing and moving, even when their bodies are asking for rest.

I began recognising this in myself too.

After years inside high-intensity creative environments, my body recently entered a period of shutdown. It forced me to reconsider the pace I had been living at, and what it actually means to feel well.

SOFT LIFE was born from that rupture.

Not as a luxury wellness brand or guru-led retreat, but as an attempt to imagine a different ecology for creative people to exist inside of.

Somewhere between a retreat, an artist residency and a slow summer gathering, SOFT LIFE is a temporary community centred around softness, care, exchange and rest.

I look forward to developing it slowly, alongside the people who resonate with it and want to become part of its evolving community.
